The first of two 8th grade field trips in September was to the Shelburne Museum over the weekend of the 22nd. The weather was terrific as the students explored the museum's buildings, particularly ones connected to the Colonial American time period.
Students were given a "scavenger hunt" that challenged them to find answers to questions from the placard readings at certain buildings. Information that students learned will be applied to discussion in social studies class this fall.
Some students also signed up for and attended an overnight camping trip to Button Bay/Fort Ticonderoga the weekend of September 30th. Mr. McPherson and Mr. Szabo, along with Mr. Sturtevant, Mr. Barwin and several parents took 26 students to set up tents, play card games, fish, play basketball and sit by the fire in the evening after a cookout.
The next morning they drove to Fort Ticonderoga. Students had an opportunity to watch how soldiers from the 18th Century loaded and fired muskets and cannons, experienced what life was like in the 1700's in the fort and went through a corn maze and the "King's Garden.” This experience will be discussed and applied in the spring in social studies class as students learn about the 7 Years War and the American Revolution.
