Introducing the Standard Response Protocol

MVSD has adopted the Standard Response Protocol for handling emergency situations. This video explains more about that.

To ensure a safe and secure learning environment, we have implemented the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) as a key component of our all-hazard safety planning. The SRP is a nationally recognized approach to emergency preparedness that standardizes the response to various emergency situations. Whether it is a weather event, fire, or a situation that requires lockdown, the SRP provides a clear, practiced set of actions to maximize the safety of everyone in our schools.

What is the Standard Response Protocol (SRP)?

The protocol is built around five key actions that everyone in our schools—students, faculty, and staff—will follow in the event of an emergency. Each action is simple, easy to understand, and designed to maximize safety.

  1. HOLD
    • Definition: "In Your Classroom or Area"
    • When Used: When the hallways need to be kept clear, but there is no immediate danger to the school community.
    • What Happens: Students remain in their classrooms and continue their normal activities until the hold is lifted.
  2. SECURE
    • Definition: "Secure the Perimeter"
    • When Used: If there is a potential threat outside the school.
    • What Happens: All exterior doors are locked, and no one is allowed to enter or leave the building. Inside, classes continue as usual.
  3. LOCKDOWN
    • Definition: "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight"
    • When Used: If there is a threat inside or very near the school.
    • What Happens: Classroom doors are locked, lights are turned off, and students are instructed to stay quiet and out of sight.
  4. EVACUATE
    • Definition: "To the Announced Location"
    • When Used: When students and staff need to move to a safer location, either inside or outside the building.
    • What Happens: Everyone is directed to quickly and quietly move to a designated location.
  5. SHELTER
    • Definition: "For Hazard and Safety Strategy"
    • When Used: During environmental threats, such as severe weather.

What Happens: Students and staff follow specific instructions to take shelter in a designated area until the threat has passed.

Training and Drills:

  • Faculty and Staff: All faculty and staff members have undergone training on the SRP to ensure they can effectively implement these actions in an emergency.
  • Students: We have introduced these safety actions to our students in an age-appropriate manner. Regular drills are conducted so that students know what to do in each situation.

Collaboration with Local First Responders:

We are fortunate to have strong support from our local first responders, including law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services. These professionals work closely with us to refine our safety plans and participate in our drills to ensure seamless coordination during any real-life incident.

Our Commitment:

The safety of our school community is our primary concern. We will continue to review and refine our safety protocols, conduct regular drills, and work with local experts to maintain a secure environment for all. If you have any questions or concerns about the SRP or our overall safety plans, please feel free to contact your child’s school principal, the district office, or myself at the contact information listed below.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our schools safe.
