The annual Learning and the Brain Conference drew more than 1,500 attendees from 20 countries this spring, with sessions focused on executive function skills and their role in student learning. Patel heard from executive function specialist Peg Dawson, whose assessment tools will help shape MVSD's MTSS framework around developmentally appropriate skills. Neuroscientist Dr. Wendy Suzuki of NYU presented research showing that even brief physical activity can improve attention, memory, mood, and learning. Author Natalie Wexler addressed the reading-writing connection, explaining how writing can deepen comprehension and narrow knowledge gaps between struggling and proficient readers. The district is already exploring how these findings can be applied to professional development and instructional practice next year.
